"The importance of documenting and understanding literacy learning success stories in large urban school districts has become increasingly clear. Upon finding evidence that In2Books was associated with improvements in reading achievement, we attempted to look beneath the surface of those improvements to gain insight into what actually made a difference.
"Looking more deeply, we concluded that something in addition to classroom practices or providing professional development was at work. Consideration of the principles behind the practices revealed that the authentic, challenging work, the actualization of a learning community, and engagement were all central to the impact of I2B."
