My name is Chris Harris, and I am the 3rd Grade Teacher at St. Elisabeth School in California. This is my first year as an In2Books teacher. I am thrilled with this program and would love an opportunity to share our experience at IRA.
We have had a strong Language Arts Curriculum in the past with Houghton Mifflin and Reading First, but what I have felt our program lacks is an in-depth connection to comprehension with longer texts. When I heard about In2Books I knew this was the perfect solution. The students really enjoy receiving their books, and even the students that usually struggle having a desire to read are very excited to read their new books and learn more about the topic. Connecting the friendly letter writing format engages the students across the Language Arts curriculum, and they work hard to find good details to share with their pen pals. The program affords them multiple opportunities to explore comprehension: From answering and asking pen pal questions, discussing the book with other students who choose the same selection, exploring the links and information on the student homepage, discussing the story and letter at home with their families and in class during the In2Books lessons. The students look forward to finishing their books and sharing their story experiences and world connections with their pen pals, who guide them and mentor them along the way. It is also wonderful for the students to see their progress throughout the year. Just yesterday one of the mentors sent one of my students a letter commenting on how his writing and spelling skills have improved since the beginning of the year. It is also a great way to introduce my 3rd Graders to global communication and collaboration.
The aspect of the program that has generated the deepest learning and most excitement has been the "student-driven" nature of In2Books. They love being able to pick their books, share their learning, and share their writing. It involves the family, the class, and mentors providing multiple sources of guidance. In2Books set the stage for a wonderful collaboration of the 21st Century community, and it takes student learning to new heights! We are proud to be an in2Books classroom, and my students are truly enjoying their learning.
Thank you again for a great program!
